How to Create and Publish Lined Journals & Notebooks on Amazon KDP
Lined notebooks and journals are the foundation of many self-publishing businesses. While they are simple to construct, rookie mistakes in line spacing, page counts, and margin bleed frequently trigger Amazon print previewer errors. Here is how to create perfect lined journals every time.
Choosing the Right Line Spacing (Ruling)
- **College Ruled**: 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) spacing between horizontal lines. Ideal for teens, college students, and dense note-taking.
- **Wide Ruled**: 11/32 inch (8.7 mm) spacing. Standard for elementary students, kids, and large handwriting.
- **Dot Grid**: 5 mm grid spacing. The universal standard for bullet journaling and creative sketching.
Bleed vs. No Bleed for Lined Pages
- **No Bleed**: Lines stop at least 0.25" before the edge of the paper, leaving a white border around the page. Safer for novice publishers.
- **Bleed**: Lines extend all the way off the edge of the page. This looks far more professional but requires adding 0.125" to page width and 0.25" to page height in your source manuscript.
