7 Most Common Amazon KDP Cover Upload Errors (And How to Fix Them)
Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours designing a book cover, only to have Amazon's Print Previewer flag errors and reject your PDF. Here are the 7 most common cover errors and their instant fixes.
Error 1: 'Your cover dimensions are incorrect'
Amazon requires your uploaded PDF to match the exact combined dimensions: `Front Cover + Spine + Back Cover + 0.125" Bleed on all 4 sides`. If your page count changed in your manuscript, your spine width changed, making your cover file too narrow or too wide. Always recalculate your total cover dimensions using an updated spine calculator.
Error 2: 'Text is outside the safe zone / too close to the trim line'
All text (including your title, subtitle, and author name) must sit at least 0.25" inside the final trim line. If text touches the outer 0.125" bleed margin, Amazon flags it because mechanical paper cutters have a 1/16" variance during trimming.
Error 3: 'Spine text is too wide for your page count'
Amazon does not allow spine text on books with **fewer than 79 pages**. Even on books with 80+ pages, spine text must have at least 0.0625" (1.6 mm) of clearance on both sides of the spine fold lines.
Error 4: 'Low image resolution (under 300 DPI)'
Ensure all images used in your cover layout are exported at 300 DPI minimum. Avoid saving images as compressed low-quality JPEGs from web screenshots.
Error 5: 'Barcode is covered or obscured'
Ensure the 2" × 1.2" lower right quadrant of your back cover is free of critical text and symbols.
Error 6: 'Transparencies or layers not flattened'
Complex drop shadows and transparent PNG layers can render incorrectly in Amazon's RIP (raster image processor). Export your final PDF using PDF/X-1a:2001 or standard flattened PDF 1.4.
Error 7: 'Colorspace mismatch (RGB vs CMYK)'
Amazon KDP automatically converts RGB colors to CMYK during printing. Some neon RGB shades shift darker when converted. Preview your designs in CMYK mode before submitting.
